Bar Harbor, Maine - The Fraternal Order of Eagles has given $30,000 to The Jackson Laboratory to support basic genetic research. This gift is the Eagles' first-ever national award to a Maine organization, and was given at the urging of past State President Emma Dumont of Westbrook, Auxiliary #2977, and Grand Aerie #3801 Trustee Thomas McGrath of Vergennes, Vermont.
The Eagles formally announced this gift during their recent national convention in Buffalo, New York. Ms. Dumont says, "I am thrilled to have helped facilitate this gift to promote discovery at one of the world's preeminent research facilities. The Eagles are proud to partner with The Jackson Laboratory in this effort."
The gift will support type 1 diabetes research conducted by Dr. David Serreze, staff scientist at The Jackson Laboratory. Scientists at The Jackson Laboratory and at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine, including Dr. Serreze, recently discovered a way to protect insulin-producing cells from the immune responses that cause type 1 diabetes. The gift from the Eagles will help Dr. Serreze build on this success, and work toward a more effective treatment for this disease.
The Fraternal Order of Eagles is an international, non-profit organization that supports research in cancer, diabetes, heart disease and kidney disease. It was founded by six theatre owners in 1898 in Seattle, Washington. They formed the "The Order of Good Things"--now the Eagles. Previous gifts from the Eagles to The Jackson Laboratory have included support for cancer research from the Rumford Falls Aerie #1248 and from the Brewer Ladies Auxiliary #3177.
