Notes About IMR Strains
Nomenclature
For transgenic strains, the nomenclature, if complete, is correct. Italics should not be used in transgenic nomenclature.
Recently a revision has been made to the nomenclature.
The designation of STOCK as a genetic background will largely be replaced by more specific nomenclature. A semicolon separating two strain abbreviations in a strain symbol, e.g. B6;129, indicates an inbred strain maintained by sibling matings and composed of genetic background from only the two inbred strains indicated. It is not necessarily constructed from F2 matings as is a recombinant inbred strain. The order of the strains in the symbol has no significance; B6, when involved, will be written first for consistency.

Congenic Strains
Where the strain is indicated as C57BL/6J, the generation number may be as low as N=5. If you need more information on the genetics of congenics, please contact Customer Service at 1-800-422-MICE.
