Searching from the search field that appears on all pages comprises a Basic Search. Clicking the word "Search" executes the search and returns all matches for that query string. The query string can consist of one or more words. The table below describes rules that apply to the query string.
The Basic Search initially returns only information from The Jackson Laboratory Web pages, not databases. Simply click on the available "Show Database Results" link on the search results page to submit your search query against a set of The Jackson Laboratory databases. The following databases are searched:
- The JAX®Mice Database
- Mouse Phenome Database
Note: Text appearing between square brackets represents characters entered into the query string text box.
| Rule | Description |
| Single Word Search | Entering one word finds documents that contain that word.
For example, searching for [diabetes] finds all documents that contain the word "diabetes" anywhere in that document. |
| Multiple Word Search | Entering more than one word finds documents that contain any of those words in any order.
For example, searching for [diabetes research] finds documents that contain "diabetes" or "research" or "diabetes research". |
| Compulsory Inclusion [+] | Attaching a [+] in front of a word requires that the word be found in all matching documents.
For example, searching for [diabetes + research] only finds documents that contain the word "diabetes": documents that have "diabetes" in them will rank higher according to this search, but only "research" is required to appear on a page. Note: In a multiple word search, you can attach a [+] in front of every token including the very first token. A token is a string enclosed in double-quotes ("). It can be a single word or a phrase. |
| Compulsory Exclusion [-] | Attaching a [-] in front of a word requires that the word not be found in all matching documents.
For example, searching for [diabetes - research] only finds documents that do not contain the word "research", but do contain "diabetes". Note: in a multiple word search, you can attach a [-] in front of every token except the very first token. A token is a string enclosed in double-quotes ("). It can be a single word or a phrase. |
| Phrase Matching ["..."] | Putting quotes around a set of words only finds documents that contain that precise phrase.
For example, searching for ["diabetes research"] only finds documents that contain the string "diabetes research". |
| Wildcard Matching [*] | Attaching a [*] to the right side of a word returns left side partial matches.
For example, searching for the string [diab*] finds documents that contain all words beginning with "diab" such as "diabetes" or "diabolical". You can also insert an asterisk in the middle of a word. For example, searching for the string [res*ch] finds documents that contain words such as "research". |
Advanced Search
The Advanced Search screen lets you refine searches. Searches can be refined in the following manner:
- Restricting searches to Web page or database results
- Narrowing searches by search attributes
- Limiting searches to certain data groups
Restricting Searches to Web Page or Database Results
![]()
This section of the Advanced Search screen constrains searches to either Web pages or database results. Selecting "Web Pages" returns matches only found within The Jackson Laboratory Web pages. Selecting "Databases Only" returns matches only found within a select set of The Jackson Laboratory databases (the JAX®Mice Database and the Mouse Phenome Database ).
Selecting one or the other of these constrains the capabilities of the bottom section Limiting Searches to Certain Data Groups (see below).
Narrowing Searches by Search Attributes or Page Location and/or Type
This portion of the advanced search narrows the scope of the search. Each section is defined below:
- all of the words: Documents must contain all of the words you list here
- the exact phrase: Documents must contain these exact words in the order you typed them
- any of the words: Documents must contain at least one of the words you list here
- without the words: Documents that contain these words will be omitted from your results
- occuring: Allows you to specify where in the page you want the search to be made against
- of file type: Allows you to specify what kind of file you want listed in the search results page
- Search Web Site: Constrains your search to only documents published in the TJL Web pages, not the databases
Limiting Searches to Certain Data Groups

Selecting "Web Pages" from the first portion of the Advanced Search (above) allows you to restrict your search to one of two categories:
- Within Category: allows you to narrow the search to general categories of information found within the The Jackson Laboratory Web pages, such as Media Releases. No databases are searched. See image below.

- Within Research Resource: allows you to choose a specific Research Resource that you wish to search against No databases are searched. See image below.

Selecting "Databases" from the first portion of the Advanced Search (above) allows you to restrict your search searching a select set of TJL Databases:
- Within Database: allows you to select a specific database that you wish to search against. As the image below demonstrates, the following databases can be searched:
- The JAX®Mice Database
- Mouse Phenome Database

Search Results Page
The standard search results page displays only pages from The Jackson Laboratory Web pages initially. A link is offered on each search results page that will run your search query against the following databases:
- The JAX®Mice Database
- Mouse Phenome Database
