Jackson hosts science education symposia May 6 and 21

The Jackson Laboratory is committed to improving the quality of science education in Maine, through innovative programs for high school students and teachers. To that end, the Laboratory provides intensive, mentored scientific research internships for science and mathematics teachers on sabbatical, as well as students enrolled in the University of Maine's Master of Science in Teaching program. And this year 12 local high school students have been working on independent research projects under the mentorship of a Jackson Laboratory scientist.

Each participant in these intensive, hands-on research projects will present summaries of their experiences in public symposia at The Jackson Laboratory:

Master of Science in teaching student symposium
Tuesday, May 6. 3:30 p.m.: Deb McGann and Denise Friant, two high school teachers who have spent the spring semester on sabbatical at the Laboratory, and Master of Science in Teaching candidate Hannah Webber, will make final presentations to complete their program requirements.

Academic year interns student symposium
Wednesday, May 21, 3:00 p.m.: High school students who have completed an academic-year internship at The Jackson Laboratory, will describe their unique research experiences.

These free public programs are presented in the Laboratory's Auditorium. For more information, please contact Randi O'Rourke in the Education Office.
