REMEMBER
Christina Rossetti
Remember me when I am gone away,
Gone far away into the silent land;
When you can no more hold my hand,
Nor I half turn to go yet turning stay.
Remember me when no more day by day
You tell me of our future that you planned:
Only remember me; you understand
It will be late to counsel then or pray.
Yet if you forget me for a while
And afterwards remember, do not grieve:
For if the darkness and corruption leave
A vestige of the thoughts once I had,
Better by far you should forget and smile
Than that you should remember and be sad.
For everyone who has lost a loved one, the concluding lines of Christina Rossetti's poem must bring a feeling of comfort. For there were assuredly good times. Times when the sun shone. Times of laughter and joy together - and it is remembering these times that warms the heart. For those with faith, there is the certainty of coming together again. For everyone, we must remember the privilege of caring for those we loved, both in times of trial, but especially in the times when there was laughter in the air and a glow in the heart.
